Tutoring & Mentoring

One-to-one sessions built around the individual learner — their strengths, their challenges, their goals.

What our sessions look like

All our tutoring is delivered face-to-face, one-to-one. Sessions last one hour, with the final 5-10 minutes set aside for feedback and clarification of any homework or practice tasks.

Sessions are highly varied and designed to keep learners engaged. We cover a range of activities depending on the individual's targets — from phonemic awareness and phonics work to comprehension strategies, spelling practice, writing development and study skills.

We often send home readers, games, quizzes or short tasks to help reinforce what was covered in the session. These are carefully chosen to be manageable and confidence-building, not stressful.

A typical session might include:

  • Phonemic awareness and phonics activities
  • Fluency and automaticity in reading
  • Reading comprehension strategies
  • Spelling patterns and rules
  • Writing structure and expression
  • Vocabulary development
  • Study and memory strategies
  • 10-minute feedback & homework review

Staying informed every step of the way

We believe parents and students should always know how things are going. Here's how we keep everyone in the loop.

💬

Session feedback

At the end of every session, we take 10 minutes to talk through what we covered and any tasks to practise at home.

Email us anytime

We're happy to provide additional feedback between sessions. Please email us with your query so we can address it properly — either by email or at your next session.

📊

Progress reviews

Supported self-assessment is ongoing throughout. A fuller progress review normally takes place 6 or 12 months depending on the intervention goals and program.

Evidence-based methods that work

We draw on a range of proven, structured methodologies — selected and combined to suit each individual learner.

✍️

The Writing Revolution

A structured approach that builds writing skills systematically from sentence level through to full essay construction. We use this to help students who struggle with written expression develop clear, organised and confident writing — from primary age through to VCE.

💬

Jenny Baker Expressive Writing Method

Focused on developing powerful, vivid and expressive writing. We use this to help students move beyond basic construction into writing that communicates with real impact — developing vocabulary, verb choice and expressive techniques that bring their writing to life.

🔢

Maths Support

Building core number sense, maths facts fluency, basic computation and algebra — addressing maths anxiety and building genuine confidence. We draw on Steve Chinn's Maths Explained and More Trouble with Maths, Maths Mate and Numbershark.

🔤

Systematic Synthetic Phonics

Including Phonic Books UK, Little Learners Love Literacy, Spelfabet,TRUGS and Wordshark. We use structured phonics approaches to build decoding, fluency and spelling skills — particularly for younger learners and those with phonological difficulties. As learners get older we integrate more Morphology and Etymology using various resources including Morpheme Magic and Morph Mastery.

A note on our approach

Following assessment and goal setting we draw on a range of resources and methods to suit the needs of the individual - always evidence-based, always structured and always adapted to the learner's strengths and needs. Contact us for more information on the specific programmes we use.

Mentoring & confidence building

Learning difficulties often affect more than just academic skills. Many of our students struggle with self-esteem, anxiety around schoolwork, and a feeling that they simply aren't as capable as their peers.

Mentoring is woven into everything we do. We work to build genuine confidence — helping learners understand their own learning profile, recognise their real strengths, and develop the resilience to tackle challenges head-on.

For adult learners especially, mentoring around workplace strategies, organisation and self-advocacy can be just as valuable as academic skill-building.

"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change."

— Carl Rogers, foundational influence on our approach
